It was a busy day, wrapping gifts for shoppers of the Westfield Mall. There was festive music, wrapping paper and ribbon galore and smiles everywhere. The gift wrapping was no charge, however, donations were accepted as mall patrons listened to the mission of The Lorraine Jackson Foundatin and met the volunteers. One Scholarship Recipient pitched in her time as did a future Scholarship Applicant.

This day helped spread the word and mission of the Foundation. Many new contacts were made and more than $700 was received in donations.

The Lorraine Jackson Foundation was one of a few non-profit organizations selected to participate at the NBC4 & Telemundo 52 Health & Fitness Expo as an exhibitor, at no charge.

The annual NBC4 and Telemundo 52 Health and Fitness Expo brought a record number of attendees, and the activity around the Pearls of Hope (R) booth was nonstop for two full days.

Celebrity visitors to the booth included Dr. Bruce Hensel and the Ole Skool Crew (LA Sparks Basketball team) Dance Team.  Traci Hawkins, the team leader, told Lorraine that they would be honored to perform for the benefit of Pearls of Hope(R), at any fundraising event to which they were invited by Lorraine, at no charge.

Lorraine also obtained autographs from other celebrities: Toni Romero, Ted Chen, Shelly Hennig, Darin Brooks, and Chris Schauble.

Newscaster Ted Chen shared a story about how he met people in Beijing, China who travel for days to obtain special herbs to heal cancer.

A young woman stopped by and recognized the photograph of Angelica, one of the scholarship recipients. She went on the tell us that she attended school with her and that Angelica is a great friend, and a bubbly and cheerful person to be around.

A reporter from the LA Times was very interested  Foundation, and is going to present the story ideas to her editor. Representatives from Chevron asked if they could stay in touch to invite the Foundation to exhibit, for free, at a healthfair in 2008.

Several cancers survivors and many others who had friends and families that were still fighting the disease visited the booth. They all  expressed appreciation for the support that the Foundation offers to children who have been hit with such a difficult loss.

The beautiful roses which caught everyone's eye were donated by Mystic Flowers & Gardens.

Dedicated Pearls of Hope(R)  volunteers helped both days in the booth to hand out information and answer questions. Each volunteer wore a lanyards with pictures of the scholarship recipients on them and the Pearls of Hope(R) logo. Everywhere the volunteers visited throughout the convention, the lanyard prompted questions and gave the volunteers more opportunities to spread the word.

The Lorraine Jackson Foundation sponsored a booth.

Lorraine Jackson personally attended and met several people anxious to support the mission of The Lorraine Jackson Foundation .

Revlon Run/Walk for Women (Exhibitor)
The Lorraine Jackson Foundation co-sponsored a booth at the Revlon Run/Walk for Women at the LA Coliseum. Lorraine Jackson personally attended and spoke with several people who stopped by the booth, and wanted to hear more about how the Foundation is making a difference in children's lives after the loss of their mother to breast cancer.
Hundreds of men and women stopped by the booth. Several individuals requested to be added to the mailing list, to know more about volunteer and sponsor opportunities.
Throughout the day, numerous people complimented The Lorraine Jackson Foundation and confirmed that its mission is important and necessary. Many lives have been touches by cancer as is evident in the thousands who showed up to participate in the Revlon Run/Walk for Women.
The Lorraine Jackson foundation signature pearl ribbon was introduced for the first time at the booth, and it was immediately recognized for being unique and a perfect representation for Foundation and Lorraine Jackson.
During the day, a future scholarship applicant stopped by the booth. Her commitment to continue her education and her resilience after the loss of the mother, was inspiring and heartwarming. Her goal is to study medicine and make a difference in cancer research.
We look forward to sponsorships and our donors to help make this future scholarship possible for her.

Culturing the Pearls of Hope(R)
The Lorraine Jackson Foundation proudly held it's First Annual Pearls of Hope(R) Awards & Scholarship Gala on December 3, 2003 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

With a mission to provide funding for cancer research, education, prevention and also scholarships to children who have lost a parent to cancer, the Foundation honored three outstanding contributors to cancer research and healing.  Oncologist Becky J. Miller, M.D. received the Medical Excellence Award for her work with cancer patients. As Chief of Staff at Century City Hospital, she makes a difference in people’s lives everyday. Pharmaceutical company Genentech  was presented the Corporate Excellence Award for their work in Cancer Research. For nearly 30 years Genentech has been leading the discovery, development and commercialization of targeted cancer therapies. And the Los Angeles Music Center was presented an Arts and Culture award for their contributions to the healing arts.

Keynote speaker for the Gala was Connie Stevens. The Mike Peak Jazz Quartet and vocalist Brenda Wilson, a former patient of Dr. Miller’s, provided musical entertainment.

Pearls of Hope(R) was inspired by the Hope Pearl, which give one "hope" that all things are possible... (more)

Ms. Jackson established the Foundation after being diagnosed with early stage breast cancer at the age 40. If she had received her diagnosis ten years earlier her only option would’ve been a mastectomy. Because of advancements in cancer research Jackson did not need invasive surgery and is healthy today, which she also attributes to early detection and her faith. That was a life-changing event for Jackson who is now dedicated to bringing progress and innovation to the field of cancer research. Jackson recovery was assisted by her support group and she wants to give back to the many support groups that provide hope to patients and families as well as provide scholarships to children who have lost a parent to breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society estimates a total of 1.3 million new cases for all cancers will be diagnosed in the year 2003 and over half a million people will die. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women 40-59 years of age.

Jackson is a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and participated in the 2002 Relay for Life Celebration on the Hill as an Advocacy Ambassador, spending a week in Washington, D.C. lobbing for cancer research funding. She served as team leader for the American Cancer Society’s sixth annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and was a 2002 Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Ultimate Drive campaign honoree. Jackson was named an Outstanding Woman of Achievement by the Century City Chamber of Commerce in 2002 and currently serves as Chair of the Chamber’s Women’s Business Council. As Director of Business Development for the law firm of Cheong, Denove, Rowell & Bennett, Jackson is a three-time winner of the President’s Award from the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.
